Salmon farming company Bremnes Seashore has put ELDI’s MarWall system into operation at Gissøy, one of the company’s farming sites in Bømlo, Norway. The system has been in operation for several weeks, and the initial results are encouraging, indicating that it may help reduce salmon lice infestation and improve conditions for the fish. Salmon lice are one of the major challenges facing the salmon farming industry, and at Gissøy a solution is being tested that aims to reduce the fish’s exposure to lice larvae before treatment becomes necessary.
MarWall is a semi-closed cage solution from ELDI. Deep lice skirts form a barrier against surface water, where the risk of salmon lice is highest, while oxygenated water is pumped into the cage from greater depths. This helps maintain stable water quality and good conditions for the fish.
At Bremnes Seashore, MarWall has been installed in one cage at Gissøy, while the other cages continue to operate conventionally. This allows the company to compare biological performance and cage operations with and without the system, and to monitor the effects over a longer period.
Experience from the first few weeks indicates low lice levels and low mortality in the MarWall cage, and it will be interesting to follow the results over the coming months.
