Sigurgeir Pétursson, skipper of factory trawler Tai An, has another successful trip behind him in the Southern Ocean after docking last week at Ushuaia, Argentina’s most southerly port after 56 days at sea. The ungutted catch weight for the trip was 7100 tonnes.

This was reported in Icelandic daily newspaper Morgunbladid, which announced that this was a record trip. The trawler carries a crew of 90, including Sigurgeir, who has been skipper since 2007, and the mate is Magnús Thórarinsson.

The company San Arawa AS operates the Tai An and also runs the San Arawa II, skippered by Halldór Gudnason while production manager Ingvar Jóhannesson is also from Iceland. The company is owned by Nichimo Corporation of Japan and local Argentinian entrepreneur and the Company’s President, Eduardo Gonzalez Lemmi.

Morgunbladid reports that the bulk of the catch for the trip was blue whiting and hoki which are processed as surimi, plus 180 tonnes of toothfish. Frozen production for the trip was 1760 tonnes, plus 300 tonnes of fishmeal.

Hampidjan’s website recently featured an interview with Sigurgeir in which he described fishing in the Southern Ocean, in which he said that all of the fishing gear on board Tai An, including the pelagic and demersal trawls, the trawl doors and the DynIce warps are all supplied by Hampidjan.
