Hampiðjan was today awarded the Fjörusteinn, the environmental recognition of Faxaflóahafnir (Associated Icelandic Ports). The award is given to companies operating within the port areas that have demonstrated progressiveness in environmental matters and set an example in terms of site management and maintaining a clean and orderly environment. The award has been presented since 2007 and this is its 17th edition.

Hampiðjan was selected as this year’s recipient of the Faxaflóahafnir environmental award. The decision was primarily based on the company’s strong emphasis on marine and coastal environmental issues and its efforts to reduce the negative environmental impact of its daily operations.

Hjörtur Erlendsson, CEO of Hampiðjan, accepted the Fjörusteinn award.

Hampiðjan has been actively working to map its greenhouse gas emissions to understand where the most significant impacts occur—and thereby identify the greatest opportunities for reduction—with a focus on the entire corporate group. The company also places a strong emphasis on innovation and development in fishing gear design, aiming to minimize the carbon footprint of vessels and improve fishing gear technology. Of particular note is the effort and ambition put into designing fishing gear and materials in such a way that they can be easily recycled after use. This includes projects where raw materials are reintroduced either into the production cycle of new fishing gear or into the manufacturing processes of other products.

Hampiðjan upholds its environmental priorities through close cooperation with its customers regarding the sorting of used fishing gear to ensure it is directed efficiently toward recycling. It is also important to highlight that the organization, appearance, and general tidiness of Hampiðjan’s premises at Skarfagarðar in Sundahöfn are exemplary—something greatly appreciated by the staff of Faxaflóahafnir.
